Abstract
Technology, Ghana *juanita.gasu@outlook.com Generative AI (GenAI) offers transformative potential for project management within the built environment, enabling automation of routine tasks, predictive analytics, and enhanced decision-making. In investigating factors influencing GenAI adoption in Ghana’s built environment, primary data from 89 project management professionals were analyzed using RII calculations, one-sample t-tests, and descriptive statistics. Findings reveal moderate awareness (RII = 61.40%), positive attitudes (RII = 61.60%–77.40%), but negligible adoption (Mean = 2.27–2.95, p < 0.05). This awareness-adoption gap persists despite universal recognition of GenAI's value proposition. Conceptual understanding substantially outpaces implementation-specific knowledge regarding regulatory requirements, integration needs, and cost implications. Contrary to conventional assumptions, knowledge-based barriers emerged as primary impediments, outweighing financial and infrastructural constraints. Strategic priorities emphasized cybersecurity, risk management, data governance, and training over structural formalization. The study concludes that bridging the gap in Ghana's GenAI adoption in the built environment requires coordinated interventions: structured education programs, organizational capacity- building, enabling policy frameworks, and context-adapted implementation strategies. The study addresses that gap by examining five interrelated questions in Ghana's built environment context: the level of awareness of GenAI tools and applications among project management professionals, their attitudes toward GenAI integration, the barriers most strongly constraining adoption, the application areas perceived as most relevant, and the strategic approaches considered most effective for successful integration.
