Abstract
Housing quality (HQ) research in Nigeria is expanding due to the housing crisis and rapid urbanisation. Yet critical methodological reviews are rare. Most Nigerian HQ studies rely on varied, non-standardised indicators and cross-sectional surveys that seldom assess measurement validity or bias, making study comparability and policy implications uncertain. Our systematic scoping review evaluates conceptualisations, research designs, indicators, and methodological rigour across 48 (2000-2024) Nigerian HQ studies using the PRISMA-ScR framework. Results reveal a heterogeneous evidence base that is largely conceptually ambiguous, with inconsistent indicator frameworks, limited validation, and weak links to the national housing policy and sustainability frameworks. We propose a 4-pillar benchmark framework focusing on conceptual clarity, indicator harmonisation, methodological rigour, and policy relevance to enhance future HQ measurements.
