Knowledge Management Practices, Constraints and Strategic Implications in Quantity Surveying Firms: Evidence from Nigeria

Knowledge management (KM) has emerged as a critical determinant of organisational performance and competitive advantage in professional service firms within the built environment. Although KM practices are known to be important, there is limited empirical evidence on the implementation, constraints and strategic use of in Quantity Surveying (QS) firms in Nigeria. This study examines the nature of KM practices, assess the constraints and evaluate the strategic implications of KM practices to enhance service delivery of QS firms in Nigeria. The method of data collection was based on a quantitative approach using a structured questionnaire with all 14 registered QS firms QS firms in Oyo state, Nigeria. 42 copies of a questionnaire were sent out and 32 were returned (a 76% response rate) using total enumeration sampling. The main constraints are difficulty locating relevant knowledge (MS 4.66), poor inter-staff cooperation (MS 3.81), and inadequate internal communication (MS 3.75). Strategically, respondents identified standardisation of processes, reuse of expertise, and improved service delivery speed as the most significant benefits of effective KM. The study concludes that formalisation of knowledge sharing, investment in digital management systems and institutionalisation of continuous professional development are crucial to the gap between recognition and implementation in the Nigerian Quantity Surveying practice.
