Mapping Inequalities in Indoor Environmental Quality: A Crosstabulation- Based Assessment of Residents Demographics Opeyemi

Abstract

Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) plays an important role in determining comfort and this is more pronounced in low-carbon walling material like Machine-Pressed Earth Blocks (MPEBs) buildings. Despite the growing interest in sustainable buildings, IEQ is usually assessed using indicators that conceal differences in occupants’ experiences (subjective measurement) in buildings. This study unearths these inequalities by examining the relationship between occupants’ satisfaction and demographic characteristics in relations to the key IEQ parameters. Thermal Comfort, visual comfort and lighting comfort were evaluated through systematic crosstabulation between IEQ variables and demographic characteristics. Gender, age, education level and years of residency were the demographic characteristics assessed. The results reveal a clear disparity with IEQ satisfaction particularly with thermal comfort. Descriptive statistics and graphical visualisation were employed to show the relationship pattern. Inferential statistics were explored using association-based measures (e.g., chi-square tests) to support the interpretation of the observed patterns. P-value show significant relationship between them while Cramer’s V shows the strength of the relationship. Sex (gender) revealed a moderate to not significant (p = 0.114; V = 0.188) with thermal comfort, age group was significant (p < 0.001; V = 0.288 – Moderate), level of education was also significant (p < 0.001; V = 0.319 – Moderate), alongside years of residency significant (p < 0.001; V = 0.288 – Moderate). Acoustic and visual (lighting) comfort demonstrated uneven performance across the groups. The study highlights the significance of demographic characteristics in IEQ assessment and provides evidence for inclusive framework and occupant-centred evaluation for sustainable buildings in warm-climate contexts.
