Abstract

Environment, University of Johannesburg, Johannesburg, South Africa, ndoum@uj.ac.za This study looks at the opportunity for improving the indoor air quality (IAQ) within public universities via human dynamics management. Even though a variety of factors influencing IAQ standards in universities have been discussed in the past, the current research assumes that effective understanding and management of human dynamics could be instrumental for achieving the desired results. Based on a post-positivist epistemology towards knowledge, a quantitative research design was adopted. Data were obtained from academic and administrative staff in public universities in South Africa using a structured questionnaire. A total of 17 human- dynamics influencing variables were determined through this study. Using descriptive statistical methods and exploratory factor analysis, four main latent factors have been identified as follows: Personal Environmental Interaction Factors; Human Performance and Well-being Factors; Human Adaptation and Susceptibility Factors; and Physiological Response Factors. From a practical point of view, the results of this study can help managers of IAQ within universities to consider incorporating knowledge about such human dynamics into the IAQ management process. The study also makes a theoretical contribution to the field in the sense that it helps fill one of the gaps within the IAQ literature, that is, the need to focus on human dynamics within the infrastructure of higher education. It should also be noted that considering human factors when making decisions in terms of spatial planning and facilities management would lead to better comfort, performance, and well-being of the staff.
