Abstract

Safety induction is a key element of construction occupational health and safety management, providing workers with information on hazards, safe work procedures, emergency arrangements and personal protective equipment (PPE). This study examined safety induction practices and their perceived impact on construction site safety performance in Bauchi State, Nigeria. A quantitative case-study design with a cross-sectional questionnaire survey was used among construction workers, site supervisors and safety officers on small- and medium-scale projects. From a population of 120, all 120 questionnaires were distributed, and 92 valid responses were analysed (76.7% response rate). Data were analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, reliability and inferential procedures. Findings showed high awareness and participation in safety induction (mean = 4.17); implementation challenges, particularly inadequate materials, limited funding, time constraints and weak supervision (mean = 3.85); and a strong perceived positive impact on compliance, PPE use, accident reduction and communication (mean = 4.13). Effective safety induction therefore requires management support, adequate resources, regular training and effective supervision. The study provides context-specific evidence for improving construction safety in Bauchi State.
