Abstract
Nigeria osobenedict@gmail.com Infrastructure projects in Nigeria, particularly in selected South-South States, are frequently plagued by relational risks that compromise project success. This study appraises relational risk factors in public infrastructure projects. It identified relational risk factors, determines their impact on infrastructure projects and proposes mitigation strategies for managing relational risks in the study area. The study employed a quantitative survey research design and stratified random sampling technique was employed in reaching the 268 respondents to whom the questionnaires were distributed, 202 questionnaires were duly completed and returned. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine mean item scores for key factors. The findings show that the top most sources of relational risk factors are opportunism, trust deficit, uncertainty and information asymmetry with mean item scores of 3.94, 3.92, 3.91 and 3.90 respectively. The most critical impacts identified are project delays and cost overruns with a mean item score of 4.53, delayed procurement processes with a mean item score of 3.94, and corruption and misalignment with a mean item score of 3.87, ranging from high to very high impact. Effective mitigation strategies highlighted include establishing robust communication channels and regular updates and implementing feedback loops to identify emerging relational risks. The study underscores the importance of proactive relational risk management in enhancing the performance and sustainability of public infrastructure projects. The study contributes to the growing of body of knowledge on relational risks in developing economies and provides actionable insights for project managers, policy makers, contractors and construction professionals seeking to reduce relational risks and improve project outcomes in selected South-South States of Nigeria.
